About Dr. Martinez.

It's Nice To Meet You

From a young age, I knew I wanted to fight for the underdog. Growing up as a short, skinny, gay kid in a machismo community, I often felt like the underdog myself — navigating a world that didn't quite have a place for me, carrying questions about identity and belonging that I had no roadmap for.

That experience never left me. It became the foundation of everything I do as a therapist.

When I started looking for my own support, I couldn't find a therapist who was openly gay, who understood the specific interior life of a gay man — the shame, the sexuality, the relational patterns shaped by growing up as a sexual minority. So I decided to become that therapist for others.

I left a career in Corporate America, earned my Master of Science in Social Work from Columbia University, and went on to become a Certified Sex Therapist through AASECT — the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists. Today, with 20 years of experience working exclusively with the LGBTQ+ community, I specialize in gay men's therapy in New Jersey, with a particular focus on internalized homophobia, sexual intimacy, shame, and relationship dynamics.

My clinical background includes work at the New York City Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project, the LGBT Community Center, and Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC) — institutions at the center of gay men's health and advocacy. That work shaped my understanding of what gay men actually carry, and what it takes to help them put some of it down.

My training spans Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), couples/relationship therapy, somatic approaches, mindfulness, and sex therapy. I bring all of it to bear in work that is affirming, direct, and genuinely tailored to the lives of gay men.

I've also written two books on the subject. Helping Gay Men Find Love offers practical guidance for gay men navigating dating and relationships. Enhancing Pleasure for Gay Men provides evidence-based clinical tools for therapists working with gay male clients on sexuality and intimacy. Writing them deepened my conviction that gay men deserve resources — and care — built specifically for them.

I am licensed in New Jersey, New York, Idaho, and Utah, and offer therapy via secure online sessions throughout New Jersey and beyond. If you're outside these states, I'm available for coaching.

If you've spent time in therapy feeling like you had to educate your therapist before you could actually be helped by them — this is built to be different. Book a free 20-minute consultation and let's see if it's the right fit.
