Mental Health Support for Gay Men in NJ

If you’re struggling with anxiety and depression as a gay man in New Jersey, you’re not alone—and nothing is “wrong” with you. Many gay men experience anxiety, depression, and chronic stress as understandable responses to stigma, minority stress, and years of navigating a world that hasn’t always been affirming. I provide affirming mental health therapy for gay men in NJ, helping you move out of survival mode and into a more grounded, confident, and fulfilling life.

I help gay men in New Jersey with:

Therapy is a space where you don’t have to explain or defend who you are. It’s a place to understand how your experiences have shaped you—and how to move forward with intention.

Understanding Anxiety and Depression in Gay Men

Research and lived experience consistently show that gay men experience anxiety and depression at higher rates than heterosexual men. These struggles are often rooted in:

  • Early experiences of shame or rejection
  • Chronic vigilance and people-pleasing
  • Fear of abandonment or not being “enough”
  • Ongoing exposure to discrimination or invisibility

In therapy, we don’t just manage symptoms—we explore the why behind them, helping you build tools for long-term emotional resilience.

Managing Anxiety and Depression

My approach to treating anxiety and depression for gay men in NJ focuses on:

  • Reducing chronic worry, rumination, and overwhelm
  • Addressing low mood, numbness, or hopelessness
  • Building emotional regulation and nervous system stability
  • Increasing self-compassion and self-trust

Using evidence-based and somatic techniques, we work toward relief that feels sustainable—not just short-term coping.

Addressing Trauma and PTSD

For many gay men, trauma begins early—through bullying, family rejection, or needing to hide core parts of yourself. Over time, this can lead to hypervigilance, emotional shutdown, or persistent anxiety.

Therapy provides a safe, affirming environment to process trauma using approaches that support both mind and body. Our work focuses on restoring a sense of safety, agency, and emotional grounding.

Improving Self-Esteem and Stress Management

Living in a stigmatizing culture can quietly erode self-worth. Therapy helps you:

  • Challenge internalized shame and harsh self-criticism
  • Develop healthier beliefs about your value and identity
  • Learn practical stress management and grounding tools
  • Build resilience without burning out

As self-esteem improves, many clients notice better relationships, clearer boundaries, and greater emotional ease.

Long-Term Benefits of Mental Health Therapy

Gay men who engage in therapy for anxiety and depression often experience:

  • Reduced anxiety and depressive symptoms
  • Improved mood and emotional regulation
  • Greater confidence and self-acceptance
  • A stronger sense of control and direction in life

The goal is not just symptom relief—but a life that feels more authentic and connected.

My Approach to Mental Health Therapy

Therapy is collaborative and non-judgmental. Together, we focus on helping you understand your patterns, strengthen your emotional capacity, and move forward with clarity and confidence.

Frequently asked questions

Here are some common questions to help you understand more about my practice and what to expect from our sessions. If you have any other questions, please feel free to reach out!

Where are you licensed to practice therapy?

I am licensed to practice therapy in New York, New Jersey, and Utah. This allows me to provide telehealth services to clients located in these states, ensuring that you receive the support you need regardless of your location within these areas. In all other states, I am able to provide coaching services.

Do you accept insurance?

I do not accept insurance, however, upon request, I will electronically submit your claim for you or provide you with a receipt/superbill.

What can I expect during my first therapy session?

During your first therapy session, we will focus on getting to know each other and understanding your goals for therapy. I will ask about your background, current challenges, and what you hope to achieve through our work together. This initial session is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions you might have about the therapy process. The goal is to create a comfortable, safe space where you feel heard and understood.

How long will therapy take?

The length of therapy varies depending on your individual needs and goals. Some clients find significant relief and progress in a few months, while others may benefit from longer-term therapy. During our sessions, we will regularly review your progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed. The goal is to ensure that you are moving towards your desired outcomes at a pace that feels right for you.

What if I don’t feel comfortable discussing certain topics?

It’s completely normal to feel hesitant about discussing certain topics, especially in the beginning. My approach is to create a safe, non-judgmental space where you can talk about whatever you feel comfortable with at your own pace. Over time, as trust builds, many clients find it easier to open up about more difficult issues. Your comfort and readiness are always the priority, and we will go at a pace that feels right for you.

How do I know if therapy is working?

Progress in therapy can be measured in various ways, such as improvements in mood, changes in behavior, better coping strategies, and enhanced relationships. We will set specific goals at the beginning of our work together and regularly review them to track your progress. You might notice positive changes in how you feel, think, and interact with others. Open communication about your experiences and feelings during therapy will also help ensure that we are on the right track.
